This collection is divided into four series: personal and professional papers and correspondence, class materials and papers, photographs, and negatives. The first series contains Beck's correspondence with individuals and organizations. It also contains field manuals, research findings, drafts, and other related material. The class materials series contains class syllabi, preparations for class material, and other related papers. The photographs series is divided into subjects. The negatives series is also divided into subjects. Among the subjects covered in the photograph and negative series are agriculture, Utah towns and parks, Brigham Young University, and clouds.

D. Elden Beck was born on 11 April 1906 in Spanish Fork, UT. He received a Bachelors and a Masters degree in 1929 and 1931. Beck went on to Iowa State College and finished his Doctorate degree in 1933. Beck then taught and Dixie Junior College until 1938 when he was hired at BYU as a professor of zoology and entomology.
